Data sources

TheBreakdown only loads facts (results, dates, venues, records) from public sources, and says how well each dataset is backed. Several sources agree means independent public pages gave the same answer. Nothing is marked as an official source until an official page has been opened and checked. Spotted a mistake? Report it.

Sample (placeholder) data

Sample data

Some parts of the site have no data source yet. They show invented placeholders, always with a “Sample data” badge and a dashed outline, and never name a real person. Replace them in lib/sample-data.ts when a real source exists.

  • Team news, ticket notices (My team hub)
  • Named squad and injury list (My team hub)
  • Match officials (match pages)
  • Ground capacity (venue pages)

Derived, not sampled: standings with bonus points (computed from the scoring record where it adds up), team and player cards, competition tables. Player photos appear only when a freely licensed image has been fetched, with credit under the photo.

Match statistics (data/match-stats)

! Single source

Team statistics, scoring events and pitch positions for 565 Tests: every Rugby World Cup match the feed covers, and every Test since the 2023 final involving a Tier 1 side. They come from World Rugby’s public match feed, which is unofficial and not licensed for reuse, and are reduced by us to the figures shown. Positions are as logged by the feed’s analysts and are approximate; territory shares are estimated from zone counts and marked as such; the zone activity layer shows the feed’s own per-band counts. Detail varies by match: 123 have tackle and try positions, 112 have other event positions, 330 have team statistics only. Refresh with node scripts/fetch-match-stats.mts.
